The Ecomuseum of Arid Regions of Medenine in Tunisia
The Ecomuseum of Arid Regions of Medenine in Tunisia founded within the Arid Regions Institute of Medenine (IRA) by anthropologist Dr. Kamel Laroussi and opened its doors to visitors in 2003.
The museum’s mission is to study, conserve and promote local natural and cultural heritage, that encompasses both tangible and intangible aspects, such as collective memory and the way of life of rural communities of the Tunisian arid regions.
In particular, the institution works on preservation of traditional knowledge related to local agro-pastoral production, natural resource management, and artisanship. Its permanent collection contains approximately 2100 items. In addition, the institution has an outdoor area that showcases in particular a traditional agricultural garden ("Sania" in Arabic) with a traditional irrigation system.
